Chapter Twenty-Two

“Dare, let her go, man. I have to look her over,” Surrey said impatiently.

She was so still—so not there with him. He glanced at Surrey. “He shot her with a dart gun, Surrey. I have no idea what was in the dart. She just now closed her eyes, but prior to that she was oriented. She couldn’t verbally respond, though, and her breathing slowed just as we got back here. Where’s Con with the results of that testing we did on the drugs we found at Dempsey’s?” Dare’s voice was loud, and he was clearly at the edge of his control.

“He’s coming, Dare. Move back, let me work,” Surrey demanded.

Dare moved to her head reluctantly, stroking her hair, trying to fight his rage. He kept his eyes on her as the other man checked her out.

“Her blood pressure is dangerously low. Her pulse is weak, and her pupils are unresponsive to light. Kara is on her way down here with an IV bag. We’ll hook her up, get some nutrients flowing so she doesn’t dehydrate. Con called me a minute before you arrived and let me know that the drug we found in mass quantities at Dempsey’s is a brand new sedative, recently on the black market. A derivative of this same drug is used in medicine for anxiety. In large doses it renders a person unable to respond to stimuli but quite able to feel the stimuli. I think you understand why Dempsey preferred it.”

Surrey moved around the table, gathering vials for blood draw, and looked up at Dare as he finished his synopsis of her medical condition.

“I don’t have time to find out how much of the drug Cross pumped her full of, but I need to counteract it. I need you calm in the event that she needs to be held down, Dare.

I’m not familiar with this drug, and the Narcane might cause convulsions.”

Dare nodded.

“I’ve got the bag of nutrients. Move aside, Surrey, so I can insert the IV,” Kara Bennoit said as she entered the room.

“The needle is ready for you there, Kara. She’s already dehydrated, and the drug is causing further fluid loss. I’m afraid for her kidneys if it continues. Let’s get her hooked up, and then we’ll draw her blood and insert the Narcane,” Surrey told her.

Kara Bennoit was a registered nurse and thankfully home instead of working her normal shift at NE Georgia Hospital. She inserted the IV and took Talia’s blood. Now they were ready for the Narcane.

Dare knew nothing about the drugs or what they were doing to her. The only thing he knew was that he wanted her well. Now.

Surrey held up a wicked looking syringe filled with a clear liquid and bent over the IV line Kara had just inserted into Talia. “Narcane can be a funny drug. It’s invaluable in its application as an effective tool against drug overdoses. But occasionally, the Narcane itself causes explosive side effects and has been known to kill the very people it was designed to help.
